Microtasking with LinkedIn’s Mobile App

We’ve all heard of multitasking. (Maybe you’re doing it right now.) I, for one, am a chronic multitasker. Take a call on the treadmill, catch up on my favorite podcast while walking my dog, Tater, grab a bite to eat while sending a few emails. You get the picture.

And, yeah, multitasking can make you feel like you’ve hacked life. But what about microtasking? It’s basically the idea of breaking down large tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks. Like that Chinese proverb that says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”

Microtasking and LinkedIn: A Perfect Match

When it comes to LinkedIn, microtasking is the way to go. It’s something I recommend to clients all the time — whether I actually use that term or not. Hundreds of meaningful connections and sales traction don’t happen overnight. But, you can absolutely chip away at those bigger goals with regular microtasking.

Take advantage of the in-between times—like if you’re waiting in line at the checkout, pumping gas, or taking a stretch break from your desk. You only need a few minutes to hop on LinkedIn’s mobile app and knock out some microtasks. Let’s be honest, you’re already on your phone anyway. Why not make it productive?

Here are a few goals you can start tackling right now on LinkedIn’s mobile app.

“I want to establish myself as a thought leader on LinkedIn.”

Yes! I believe in you! As you probably already know, content is key to thought leadership. Flex your content muscles with this mobile app microtask.

Try This: Spend five minutes responding to LinkedIn’s Post Ideas. These bite-sized prompts will give you just enough direction to share your thoughts quickly.

  • In the LinkedIn mobile app with Creator Mode turned ON, navigate to your LinkedIn profile.
  • Tap “Analytics & tools” at the top of your profile.
  • Scroll down to find “Ideas for your next post.”
  • Tap “Start a post” on any prompt to answer the question and create a post.

Don’t have access to post ideas yet? Don’t despair. LinkedIn is rolling out this feature gradually. You’ll see it soon! In the meantime, you can still type up a quick post on the go. Check out the content ideas section of my recent ChatGPT article if you’re feeling stuck.

“I want to boost my visibility on LinkedIn.”

Engagement is key to increasing your visibility on LinkedIn. Use those otherwise unproductive moments to join in on the conversation.

Try This: Join in on conversations happening now.

  • In the LinkedIn app, scroll through your Feed.
  • Tap any post that piques your attention.
  • Chime in with a comment or repost with your own commentary.
  • Don’t forget to check your spelling and grammar before hitting the post button.

Not sure what to say? Your comments don’t need to be long-winded or profound. Keep it short and sweet. A simple note to let the poster know you found something interesting, thought provoking, or amusing is all you need.

“I want to use LinkedIn to build relationships, and ultimately sales.”

If you want to connect with purpose, you need to understand your prospects’ worlds. That means staying in the know with their posts, job updates, birthdays, and any other milestones you can glean simply by being attentive on LinkedIn.

Try This: Skim through your newsfeed.

This one is easy. Just, take a few mindful moments to scroll through your newsfeed. No need to chime in, simply take it all in. Try saving a few posts if you want to come back to them later. When you’re back at your desk, you can wish a connection well in a new role or share an interesting discussion with someone who might be interested. Staying in the loop is a powerful way to start relevant conversations with the people you care about on LinkedIn. By the way, if you’re not seeing the news you want, check out this article on customizing your feed.

What I love about this microtasking approach is that it inches you closer to your goals without a big sweat. With the mobile app, you can log some time showing up and being intentional on LinkedIn wherever you are. Before you know it, you’ll be scoring those big wins.
