Master the Behavior, Not the Algorithm: 5 Ways to Win on LinkedIn
Jun 10, 2025
If I had a nickel for the number of times that I’m asked throughout the month, “How do I hack LinkedIn’s algorithm?” In response, I always share that unlike other platforms that are transparent about ways you can ‘game’ their algorithm, LinkedIn is more hush-hush and, honestly, I’m okay with that. I believe you should care more about using LinkedIn as a human tool to engage with other humans. Think: Quality over quantity. And…if you’ve ever felt like LinkedIn’s algorithm is working against you, you’re not alone. Even I get frustrated at times too.
But here’s the truth: The algorithm isn’t looking for hacks. It’s looking for helpful humans.
When you focus on the right behaviors—the ones that build trust, spark engagement, and demonstrate credibility—you will be rewarded through more visibility and more engagement. But more importantly, so will the people you actually want to reach.
So, if you’re tired of throwing posts into the void and wondering why they’re not landing, here are five behaviors that work with the algorithm instead of against it.
1. Show Up Consistently (Not Constantly)
✔️ Do: Post once or twice a week with intention
❌ Don’t: Cram your feed with daily updates just to be seen
You don’t have to post on LinkedIn every day to be effective—you just have to show up regularly and thoughtfully. Posting once or twice a week is enough to stay visible in your network and build momentum with the algorithm. The key is consistency over time, not bursts of activity followed by long silences. Think of it like watering a plant: more consistent attention leads to steady growth.
2. Start Conversations (Not Broadcasts)
✔️ Do: Ask thoughtful questions and share stories
❌ Don’t: Only post announcements or recycled links
If your goal is to connect, don’t just inform—invite. Posts that spark conversation perform better because LinkedIn favors engagement that creates connection. Share a real client insight, pose a question you’re wrestling with, or reflect on a professional moment that taught you something. These types of posts give people a reason to respond. When people comment, your post gets more reach—and your influence grows alongside it.
3. Engage Like a Human (Not a Lurker)
✔️ Do: Comment meaningfully on others’ content
❌ Don’t: Stay silent and hope people just find you
One of the most overlooked visibility tools on LinkedIn is simply commenting. And no, “Nice post!” or a thumbs-up reaction doesn’t count. Thoughtful, specific comments (especially on posts by your clients, colleagues, or prospects) signal that you’re active, engaged, and credible. These interactions not only boost the visibility of the post you’re commenting on but also increase your own exposure. Plus, commenting builds goodwill and deepens relationships, which is ultimately one of the main purposes of LinkedIn.
4. Optimize Your Profile (Not Just Your Content)
✔️ Do: Make sure your profile is clear, complete, and compelling
❌ Don’t: Let people land on a profile that looks unfinished or out of date
Your content might catch someone’s attention, but your profile is where trust is earned. I always say: You can have the best content out there, but you know what it does? It turns more eyeballs on your profile—this is a great thing if your profile is up-to-date, fully built out, and interesting, but if not, you’re losing credibility.
Think of your profile as your digital handshake: It should reflect who you are, what you do, and why it matters. When your profile is strategically written and visually polished, the platform recognizes it, and your engagement works even harder for you. 5. Share Value (Not Just Noise)
✔️ Do: Share insights, wins, and takeaways others can learn from
❌ Don’t: Post just to stay “top of mind”
The fastest way to become irrelevant on LinkedIn is to post content that doesn’t serve your audience. Before you hit “Post,” ask: What’s the takeaway here? Who does this help? Whether it’s a simple professional tip, a behind-the-scenes look at your process, or a client win that shows transformation, value-driven content always performs better. The algorithm pays attention to how long people linger on your post—so when you share something people pause to read, you increase your visibility and your credibility in one move.
Final thoughts:
You don’t need to “beat” LinkedIn’s algorithm.
You need to behave like someone worth following.
Can I get a mic drop? When you show up consistently, engage thoughtfully, and offer something of value, LinkedIn will work with you—not against you. And more importantly, so will the people who matter most to your business.
